I wasn’t sure what to make of the pitch clock at the beginning of the season but it’s sped up the game to the point where its inventor needs to be in the Hall of Fame. Or at the very least, whoever proposed it for 2023!
There is zero reason for any baseball game to last three hours long. This is the beauty of the pitch clock. If a game is lasting three hours long, it means there is a lot of offense happening on the field. I think back to the New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox matchups that always had the national spotlight. Many of those games were so slow that they might have lasted between three and four hours! These days, you can blink and two or three innings could pass you by. I’ll be surprised when it’s an hour into the game and it’s already in the fifth inning. Unbelievable!
While being a film critic is more or less a full-time job for me these days, I’ve missed writing about baseball. I went on tours of Wrigley Field, Citi Field, and Yankee Stadium earlier this year and will be writing about them in the days and weeks to come. I have a Busch Stadium tour planned in August and am potentially touring a few more MLB stadiums before the year is over. If I can attend a ballgame, touring the stadium is the next best thing.
Another thing I’ve missed is having MLB Network since YouTube TV yanked the network at the end of January. Let me tell you that watching ESPN is not the same. I love the MLB Network studio shows but they still haven’t made the decision to feature all network programming on the app. It’s unfortunate because my day is better when I have MLB Network playing in the background. I’m thankful that the recent Hall of Fame Induction Weekend coverage was streaming live on the app.
In other news, the trade deadline is quickly approaching. The Los Angeles Angels have pulled Shohei Ohtani off the market. Rather than be sellers, the Angels are looking to make other moves at the deadline. At the moment, the Angeles have a chance of making the postseason but both AL Wild Cards are likely to come out of the AL East. Meanwhile, Jack Flaherty likely pitched his final game for now in a St. Louis Cardinals uniform.
