New York Mets, San Francisco Giants Complete Trade for Tyler Rogers

The San Francisco Giants and New York Mets completed a trade today with three players joining the Giants in exchange for RHP Tyler Rogers. The Giants received RHP José Buttó (BOO-toh), RHP Blade Tidwell and OF Drew Gilbert. The New York Mets were busy today and also completed a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The MLB trade deadline is at 6 PM ET on July 31. Following this time, players must outright clear waivers before they can be traded.

Buttó, 27, is 3-2 with a 3.64 ERA (19er, 47.0ip), 41 strikeouts and one save in 34 games pitched for the Mets this season. Last year he was worth 2.2 bWAR while posting a 2.55 ERA in 30 games (seven starts) for the Mets. In parts of four seasons in the Majors (2022-2025), Buttó is 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA (64er, 167.0ip), 163 strikeouts and four saves.

Tidwell, 24, has pitched four games with the Mets this season (two starts), striking out 10 in 15.0 innings. He is 6-4 with a 4.10 ERA (36er, 79.0ip), 87 strikeouts and a 1.29 WHIP in 17 Triple-A games (14 starts).

The right-hander was a top-10 prospect for the Mets on MLB.com (10th) and was the Mets’ second round pick out of Tennessee in 2022.

Gilbert, 24, was batting .300 this month for Triple-A Syracuse with 11 runs, five doubles, a triple, six homers, 18 RBI and a .991 OPS in 21 games. Overall, he is batting .252 in the Minors this season with an .804 OPS in 88 games. He was ranked as the Mets’ 12th-best prospect according to MLB.com.

The 2023 Futures Game Selection and MiLB.com Organization All-Star was originally a first-round pick by the Astros in 2022 out of Tennessee (28th overall). He was traded by Houston to New York on August 1, 2023 alongside OF Ryan Clifford in exchange for RHP Justin Verlander.

Rogers, 34, is 4-3 with a 1.80 ERA (10er, 50.0ip) and 38 strikeouts in 53 games pitched (tied for most in the Majors).

The seven-year MLB veteran was originally selected by the Giants in the 10th round of the 2013 draft out of Austin Peay State University. His 97 holds since 2022 are the most in MLB and his 142 holds overall are tied with Sergio Romo for the most in franchise history. Rogers ranks 10th in the San Francisco era with 392 games pitched.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Giants designated RHP Sean Hjelle for assignment.
